St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery. Stumbled into the churchyard yesterday during my ramblings in the East Village. St. Mark’s is notable for being the burial place of Pieter Stuyvesant, Director-General of Nieuw Amsterdam (later, New York). He bought the land upon which the church stands in the 1650s. The present structure is the second church on the site and dates to the 1790s.
